ABOUT THE ROLE
As an Operations Engineer at Creem, you'll apply your engineering expertise to build the internal systems that power our financial infrastructure day to day. Think of this as a product engineer role with a focus on operations, you'll take plans from our compliance and operations leads and turn them into robust, scalable systems that the team relies on.
You'll build the tooling behind every critical operational workflow at Creem: how we verify merchants, how we score risk, how we move money, how we detect fraud, and how we keep our processes auditable. Your work transforms manual operational toil into structured, automated systems that scale with the business.
You'll partner closely with the operations and compliance teams, translating their domain expertise into shipped systems. They define what needs to happen and why; you define how it gets built and ship it. Strong opinions on implementation are welcome and expected.
You'll develop with a relentless focus on delivering functionality that drives meaningful operational outcomes. Your decision-making will be informed by direct collaboration with the people running these processes every day, ensuring the systems you build actually solve the problems they were built for.
This position carries the same ownership ethos we hold across Creem: you own the systems you build end-to-end. You have the latitude to leverage AI automation to amplify your impact, building and orchestrating agents that extend your capabilities so you can focus on the highest-value engineering work.
WHAT YOU'LL DO
Compliance Engineering: Build the structured systems that power our KYB, KYC and AML reviews, with the data models, audit trails and review interfaces the operations team uses daily.
Risk Scoring: Implement the payment-side risk scoring system, the data pipeline, the rules engine and the integration into authorization decisions.
Payouts Engineering: Build and maintain the payouts stack, identity verification, failed payout recovery, batch processing, multi-rail routing and the dashboards that make payouts ops fast and reliable.
Fraud Tooling: Build internal tools that let the team detect, investigate, and act on fraud patterns at speed.
Automation: Ship automated review and decision engines that scale operational capacity without scaling headcount.
Ops Tooling: Build the scripts, CLIs, dashboards and internal tools the operations team needs to do their jobs well.
AI Integration: Build and integrate AI agents into operational workflows, with clear guardrails and reliable behavior.
Reliability: Write code that runs unattended in production and build the alerting that surfaces issues quickly.
WHAT WE VALUE
Execution Excellence: You take a well-scoped problem and ship a working system. You don't need to be told twice.
Systems Thinking: You see the whole pipeline, not just the function in front of you. You design for failure modes, not just happy paths.
Pragmatic Engineering: You ship the right thing for the stage we're at. Over-engineering kills startups; under-engineering kills operational systems.
Ownership: You take responsibility for the systems you build, including the boring parts like monitoring, runbooks and on-call response.
Automation Mindset: Every manual task you watch the team do twice is an automation opportunity.
AI-First Mindset: You build with AI agents as first-class collaborators, in the systems themselves, not just in your IDE.
Bias for Action: You'd rather ship v1 this week and iterate than spec the perfect v3 for next quarter.
REQUIREMENTS
Technical Prowess: You have backend engineering experience with modern technologies like TypeScript, NodeJS, NestJS, Python and SQL, alongside familiarity with modern cloud infrastructure.
Builder's Mindset: You've shipped meaningful systems before, whether at a company, in a venture, or in side projects that demonstrate your initiative.
Production Discipline: You write code that runs unattended in production and you build the observability that proves it works.
Data & Pipelines: You can design a clean data model, build a pipeline, and ship a reporting layer without reaching for a 3-month vendor evaluation.
Communication Excellence: You articulate ideas clearly and document thoroughly, understanding that transparent communication is fundamental to our collaborative approach.
Problem-Solving Aptitude: You approach challenges with creativity and pragmatism, finding elegant solutions that balance technical constraints with operational realities.
BONUS QUALIFICATIONS
Fintech or Payments Background: Previous experience with payments infrastructure, merchant of record models, billing systems, payouts rails, or compliance engineering.
Compliance or Risk Engineering: Worked on KYB/KYC systems, AML pipelines, fraud detection, or risk scoring in a production environment.
Internal Tools Experience: You've built operational tooling for non-engineering teams and know what good ops UX feels like.
Entrepreneurial Experience: You've built and monetized your own projects or ventures, bringing firsthand understanding of the product lifecycle.
Execution Focus: While you appreciate great architecture, you prioritize shipping and iterating over endless conceptualizing.
OUR OFFER TO YOU
Competitive Compensation: A highly competitive salary package reflecting your expertise and impact.
Relocation Support: Comprehensive relocation assistance, visa processing if needed, and first month's rent covered.
Equity Ownership: Meaningful equity giving you real skin in the game as we build together.
Learning & Development: Dedicated budget for courses, conferences, and resources.
Flexible Time Off: We trust you to manage your energy and take time when needed.
Team Adventures: Regular gatherings in exciting locations to strengthen bonds and share ideas.
Direct Impact: The systems you build power Creem's day-to-day operations.
